Snag North of Carrick-on-Shannon Bridge: June 2010

Dear Member,

We've had a report that there's an obstruction in the river about a barge
length north of the eastern arch of Carrick on Shannon Bridge.   It's said to be just to the right of centre as you go north.  Boats heading upstream tend to make an immediate left turn north of the bridge and so miss the snag but if you were attempting to moor just north of the bridge you would hit it.

It's thought that it may be a road barrier or something associated with the works that were going on in that area.

If anyone has any further information, can they pass it on please ?

Cruise In Company to Lanesboro: June 2010

Dear Member,

Commodores comments :
Being commodore for the 1st time has been an experience and I would like to thank those who helped and supported myself and Laureen leading up to and on the Rally itself.
A number of boats left cootehall as planned Sat morning and made Lanesboro Marina around 5pm. We had 3 other boats already moored there on arrival. The Rafterys ,mc Hughs and Downes families all very welcome 1st timers on a Boyle River trip. We had a commodores reception followed by Sailing lessons in Lough Ree given by the ever patient Dave Taylor but due to lack of wind the sailing dingy was towed into Dock by Rib (similar to The Americas cup practice) and the BBQ began at this fine facility.

Sunday started with breakfast and more sailing. It was great to see everybody who wanted a go, both adults and children in the sail boat at the capable hands of Dave once again.I believe he enjoyed his marlboro when he finally came ashore. Hestia and Rioja made a burst across the lake with almost 20 people for a visit to Athlone which was buzzing with festivities. Back to lanesboro for some food and night caps.It rained all day monday for the testing trip back, with dangerously low water levels and engine troubles, everybody made it back even if they had to limp a bit of the way. Be very careful of the low water levels at the moment!

Notice from Waterways Ireland: March 2010

Hi All

Waterways Ireland wishes to advise all Masters and users of the Shannon Navigation that the black starboardhand marks in Lough Key on the Shannon Navigation (upstream of Clarendon Lock) are to be changed to the colour green.

This will be done on a phased basis commencing shortly. Mariners will be advised accordingly as the work progresses.
